Towards the end of May, Sergio Izzaguire, Jr. goes to the strawberry patch each morning at slightly past dawn to join his dad, Sergio, Sr. He bends down, smoothly lifts the green leaves to find the berries hiding underneath. When he sees a berry that is red all the way, he gently pinches the stem between your thumb and index finger. “Picking strawberries is an art, if the strawberries are to remain bright and unbruised.” Sergio says. “You have to be gentle yet you have to be fast. We have to be at the Farmer’s Market the next morning at 8 am. Sergio Izzaguire refers to the strawberry as the ‘perfect fruit’ and every May and June at Crazy Farm are speckled with the brilliant red berries. On May 18, their destination is Silver Spring Strawberry Festival.
“No fruit announces spring as beamingly as strawberries” says Milk Lady Farmer’s Market’s founder, and this year’s Silver Spring Strawberry Festival organizer, Gigi Goin. “Strawberries are the first fruits of the summer and are ripe with the promise of the bountiful fresh local food to come.”
The Silver Spring Strawberry Festival is to take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Expect fresh strawberries, strawberry shortcake, strawberry themed food, pies, healthful desserts… But most of all expect a full day of family fun: hay rides, pony rides, games, antique cars, Maryland wines, local artists, crafts, local farmers with fresh local strawberries, fruits and veggies, family-friendly entertainment, music performances, and a variety of prepared-food vendors. That’s a lot of excitement to look forward to!
This year Silver Spring Strawberry Festival is moving to a new Location: Cedar Ridge Farm in Burtonsville. Formerly a working farm, it is now the home of the Cedar Ridge Community Church and the Burtonsville farmers’ market. “Every year we offer more activities and attract more people” said Gigi Goin, “This year we are expecting to draw in 3000 family members. We are moving to a bigger and better location to accommodate the larger crowds and expand upon the Cedar Ridge Farm’s agricultural themes.”
The 63 acre Cedar Ridge farm in Burtonsville is a great site for bringing together residents throughout greater Silver Spring. Festival proceeds will benefit the MLM WIC matching program that helps local families in need, as well as Shepherds Table of Silver Spring and a local woman’s shelter in Laurel, Maryland.
Milk Lady Markets began its involvement with the 28-year local festival in 2012, when the Colesville Strawberry Festival Committee announced its retirement. “It is very important for us to keep local institutions like the Strawberry Festival going” says Milk Lady Farmers Markets founder, Gigi Goin, who stepped in time in to keep the event going. “We are here to provide a venue for local farmers who offer us the freshest, most sustainable food. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the beginning of the growing season in Maryland than with fresh, local strawberries.”
Families may go to the MLM website to purchase tickets for the Silver Spring Strawberry Festival new location on MD Route 198 & Peach Orchard Road. This marks the first time rural Burtonsville will host the Silver Spring Strawberry Festival; sponsored by Milk Lady Markets in partnership with Cedar Ridge Community Church, 2410 Spencerville Road, Burtonsville, Maryland 20868, on Saturday May 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
